Venerable Gabriel of Samtavro (Urgebadze) — heavenly intercessor and man of prayer
Truly blessed are those people who live under a special heavenly protection. For many Orthodox Christians, such protection and spiritual support is Venerable Gabriel of Samtavro (Urgebadze).
Which believer has not, in moments of danger, sorrow, or trials of life, experienced special help after sincere prayer to Elder Gabriel? When human strength proves powerless, and help comes unexpectedly and brings comfort to the heart, a person clearly feels the care and prayerful intercession of the saint before God.
Elder Gabriel was a man of extraordinary love and mercy. During his lifetime he said: “My cross is all of Georgia and half of Russia.” These words reflect the breadth of his heart and his unceasing prayer for people. Believers are convinced that even today the venerable elder covers with his intercession countries and peoples, churches and monasteries, families, and every person who turns to him with faith.
We are all different: quick-tempered and calm, strong and weak, hardworking and lazy, joyful and despondent. Yet every person is united by the need for love and understanding. Often we hide our inner pain behind the mask of everyday busyness and outward well-being. However, there is a place for each of us in the loving heart of Elder Gabriel. One need only turn to him in prayer, and a person receives consolation, hope, and spiritual support.
What is especially remarkable is that the saint does not abandon us even when we make mistakes and distance ourselves from God. Like a loving father, he continues to pray for his spiritual children, helping them once again find the path to salvation. His boundless love covers human weaknesses and inspires repentance.
When people complained to the elder about the difficulties of spiritual life, the absence of hope and grace, he did not condemn them, but prayed fervently for all: for his spiritual children, for his loved ones, for Georgia, Russia, and the entire Orthodox world.
This website and the community dedicated to the elder have been created in memory of Venerable Gabriel as our heavenly spiritual guide. Believers turn to him in prayer, trusting that he stands before the Throne of the Holy Trinity and lifts up human requests and sorrows to the Lord.
The saint helps not only in visible difficulties — illnesses, loneliness, dangers, and everyday trials — but also in spiritual struggle. Often a person does not notice the temptations and misfortunes from which the Lord preserves him through the prayers of His saints. Venerable Gabriel helps us resist evil, strengthens our faith, and supports a person on the path to salvation.
Let us therefore ask the holy elder to protect us from every evil, strengthen us in faith, grant us patience in sorrows, and not abandon us at the most decisive moment of life — the hour of our passage into eternity. May the Lord, through his prayers, make us worthy to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven together with all the saints.
Prayer to Venerable Gabriel of Samtavro
O blessed Gabriel, likeness of the ancient fathers and steadfast confessor of the faith of Christ! From your youth you loved the Lord with all your heart and zealously followed Him.
But we, unworthy servants of God, do not possess proper humility and piety; daily we sin, judge our neighbors, and find no justification for our actions. Therefore we implore you: ask the Lord to grant us understanding of His holy will, so that we may be not only hearers of the word of God, but also doers of it.
Holy one of God, help us to love the Lord with all our heart, to cleave to Him with our soul and our thoughts. Ask for us joy, peace, patience, and consolation in all sorrows according to the great mercy of God.
To our Lord Jesus Christ be all glory, honor, and worship unto the ages of ages. Amen.
The Life Path of Venerable Gabriel
The future Archimandrite Gabriel, known in the world as Goderdzi Urgebadze, was born on August 26, 1929, in Tbilisi. From his earliest years, the Lord guided him in a special way along the path of spiritual service.
One day, after hearing words about the crucifixion of Christ, the boy became interested in their meaning. On the advice of a church watchman, he obtained a Gospel and came to love Holy Scripture so deeply that, after several years, he knew it almost by heart.
From his youth he aspired to the monastic life and later said: “There is no greater heroism than monasticism.” At the age of 26, he received monastic tonsure with the name Gabriel, in honor of Venerable Gabriel of Athos.
In the courtyard of his own home, Father Gabriel built a small church with his own hands. Working from early morning until late evening, he practically did not rest and completed the construction without anyone’s help.
A special page in his life was the feat of confession. On May 1, 1965, he publicly burned a huge portrait of Lenin during a holiday demonstration and openly preached Christ. For this act the elder was subjected to cruel persecution: he was beaten, arrested, and later declared mentally ill. Yet even these trials could not shake his faith.
Venerable Gabriel spent the final years of his life in Samtavro Monastery in the ancient city of Mtskheta. His unusual behavior often confused those around him, but behind his outward simplicity and holy foolishness were hidden deep humility, prayerful labor, and all-embracing love for people.
Contemporaries recalled that the elder received every person as if they were his own family. He rejected no one, condemned no one, and saw the image of God in everyone. His heart was open to all who were in need.
On November 2, 1995, Venerable Gabriel departed to the Lord. According to his will, the saint’s body was buried in a simple mat on the grounds of Samtavro Monastery.
On December 20, 2012, the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church numbered Archimandrite Gabriel Urgebadze among the saints.
Today Venerable Gabriel of Samtavro is venerated in many countries as a great intercessor in prayer, ascetic, and spiritual guide. His life has become an example of selfless service to God, humility, and boundless love for people.
One of the elder’s most famous teachings says:
“Before God, all sins are like little stones. There is no sin greater than the mercy of God.”
These words continue to strengthen the hearts of believers today, reminding us that the path to God is always open to a person who sincerely repents.
